Selling A Kentucky Shriner’s Hospital

After nearly four years on the market, the former Shriners Hospital on Richmond Road in Lexington has been sold, according to a post on the Facebook page of Fayette PVA David O’Neill.The post says the property was sold to the Kentucky Easter Seal Society for $10 million.Officials say the facility is expected to be used as a hospital again, but no word yet on when it’s expected to be in operation.

Meteor Shower

Space lovers and those looking towards the new year will get a nice treat. 2021 is starting off with the peak of the Quadrantids meteor shower.CBS News reports that NASA calls it one of the “best annual meteor showers” that can be seen January 2 into January 3.According to NASA, the Quadrantids return each year between December 28 and January 12 and were first seen in 1825.

Governor Beshear Likes Larger Payments

Kentucky’s Democratic governor has made a pointed plea for $2,000 COVID-19 relief checks, saying the larger direct payments would pump an extra $5 billion into the state’s virus-damaged economy.Gov. Andy Beshear sided Tuesday with those wanting to go bigger as the U.S. Senate weighs whether to more than triple the $600 checks for most Americans.

Virginia Hands-Free Law

Virginia’s new hands-free law will go into effect on Jan. 1.Under the new law, it will be illegal to hold your phone at all while driving.Violators may be fined $125 for the first offense and $250 for subsequent offenses.The penalties increase for those convicted of violating the hands-free law and reckless driving, with steeper fines, jail time, and license suspension.

Magoffin County Receives Vaccine

The Magoffin County Health Department received 200 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine last week. Within days, according to Public Health Director Pete Shepherd, most of the area’s first responders and medical workers received the vaccination.“Every family in Magoffin County has been affected by this virus. We’ve either had somebody with it, hospitalized, or a death,” said Shepherd. “So, you know, we’re a close-knit community and everybody knows each other. And I think that helps us in a way, that everybody gets the message.”

Parks And Pages Book Club

The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park in Kentucky is inviting the public to read books along with park rangers for a second year.Officials said in a statement that the popular Parks and Pages book club will continue in 2021 with a new theme: “The Civil War: Beyond the Battlefield.”The statement says some discussion topics will include civilians, African-American experiences, medicine and prisoners of war.The first selection for 2021 is “Behind the Scenes” by Elizabeth Keckley.A discussion will be held January 15th.

Perry County Bottled Water Distribution

Several water line leaks this week in Perry County resulted in outages, boil water advisories and bottled water distribution, according to City of Hazard Utilities.Water was given out on Tuesday and will resume on Wednesday according to the utility.The water is being distributed at Robinson Elementary School and the Lost Creek Fire Department.The utility says crews are working around the clock repairing water lines.

Not only are we a few days away from closing the books on 2020, but the start of Girl Scouts cookie season is also nearing.Girl Scouts will begin to sell cookies on January 1st in Kentucky.For those needing to find cookies, Girl Scouts has set up a page on its website to help people find a local troop.Girls Scouts is also making it possible for customers to buy cookies online this upcoming season at gskentucky.org. Customers just need to ask a scout about the Girl Scout Digital Cookie platform.A new cookie, the Toast Yay!, with a taste of french toast will also be available for the upcoming sale season.

Stimulus Checks

While some Americans may have already received their $600 stimulus payments , Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says those who haven’t will be able to track their checks beginning later this week.Mnuchin said in a series of tweets that the Treasury has delivered a payment file to the Federal Reserve. Paper checks will be mailed out beginning today, says Mnuchin, with overall distribution continuing into next week.
